The summer solstice, June 21st this year, marks the longest day of the year—a season of peak expansion, vibrant growth, and abundant light. Just as the earth reaches its fullest expression, the solstice invites us to pause, check in, and nurture our internal lives.
I wanted to put together a quick guide to using this natural turning point to honour your mental, social, and emotional health.
1. Mental Health: Mindful Presence Outside
With summer's high energy, our minds can feel busy. To ground an overactive brain, look to nature.
The Practice: Spend 10 minutes outside without your phone. Engage your senses: feel the warmth of the sun, listen to the birds, and notice the shifting shades of green.Take a deep breath and feel the sun on your face.
The Shift: Anchoring yourself in the present moment quiets mental chatter and reminds you that you are allowed to grow at your own pace.
2. Social Health: Intentional Connection
Solstice is traditionally celebrated in community, but true social health is about depth, not a packed calendar.
The Practice: Skip the crowded events for a sunset walk with a close friend or a quiet evening around a fire pit with your closest, safest fellow humans.
The Shift: Focus on staying open and connected. Share your joys and your hardships. Choosing to love and be loved intentionally is deeply restorative.
3. Emotional Health: Reflecting & Dreaming Forward
Sitting exactly in the middle of the year, the solstice is the perfect milestone to reflect on the past 6 months.
The Practice: Grab a journal and answer two questions: What have I suffered with this past 6 months? What silver linings have I found in the hardships of the last six months? What is the vision for the future I want to dream forward into?
The Shift: Reflecting builds self-compassion, while setting goals for the future builds hope and personal agency.
Finding Your Good Path
Nature never rushes its blooming season; it stays rooted while reaching toward the light. Whatever life milestone you are navigating right now, use this solstice to appreciate the growth around you and commit to walking a good path—one grounded in compassion, presence, and peace.
